This is a small Japanese restaurant located in a strip mall. They have an all you can eat option with a limited menu to choose from. Or you can order from the full menu at normal al a carte prices. The prices are reasonable. The food seemed fairly fresh but not as good as places like Tsunami or Mikado. There is a bar as well as tables but no booths to choose from. The sauces were okay and I agree with other that the tempura was a little weak. Parking is a real pain due to the fact that it is right next door to a Cafe Rio (very popular in Utah).

We went here for dinner last night. We had a very mixed group, so I was a little nervous about choosing a Japanese restaurant: half our group was from out of town, half love sushi, one disliked it very much, our oldest diner is 90 and our youngest is 10 months. We all loved it! The baby tried some rice and the oldest had salmon teriyaki, which he loved. Everyone else in between shared lots of different sushi. My favorite rolls were the Caribbean, the smoked salmon, the "good for your heart", and the squid salad. All were fantastic and such a nice change from all the imitation crab meat-based rolls we've been finding at lots of sushi places lately. We visit the salt lake area pretty frequently, and this is definitely a place I'll be sure to visit again.

I was just thinking, as I pulled into the lot and cussed all the other cars taking up space close to the front door, that there are a lot of sushi places in the area. I have about 30 in my sushi list, though admittedly, some of those are out of the area, with another good solid 5 or 6 and there's still more left to canvas. In this case, it was part canvassing sushi places and part canvassing the Canyon Rim area and also because I really wanted to sit and hang out and drink green tea and given that time was running right into that weird magic hour of 2:00, that places inexplicably seem to want to close at during weekdays, it was the best option close at hand. Inside was a lot nicer than I expected. It was strongly reminiscent of a few places I've been to on the East Coast, in terms of decor, which I'm also told are more reminiscent of actual places in Japan proper, though I can't verify that. The decor was very, very cool and I enjoyed that a great deal...excepting seeing plastic vacuum sealed bags of fish visible in the chef window. Unfortunately, that was where the glowy parts here ended. Execution was a bit iffy. Nigiri covered in green onions (WTFF?!?!!) The tempura shrimp was noticeably undercooked (all of my food arrived at once and far more quickly than is normal at any other sushi restaurant I've hit up), the pink ginger was borderline disgusting. The rolls were a bit better, with the Firecracker being decent, despite the fish being mostly mushy and the Cancun arguably being flawed in concept, but definitely flawed in executions with ratios all over the place. This one was difficult to detect what fish was in here. Most the menu are the sort of combination rolls and when I was able to extract some of the fish so, it appeared to me why. They definitely had a freshness issue. Service was blazing fast and mostly friendly, but this may have been them trying to just get everyone out the door at 2:30, which is slightly better than 2:00, but not greatly. Green tea was acceptable, but not among the best I've had. With all of the other sushi places in Salt Lake, it's difficult to choose a place like this over any of the other actual good ones.

Akasaka is a really great place to go for sushi. I've been several times and their portions are good and price is good. Always clean and friendly. Parking can be tight and they close, like many sushi places do, between like 2-5pm.

We tried Akasaka for the first time on one of their infamous buy-one-get-one-free Tuesday nights. It will be the first of many. This place is DELICIOUS, and that is coming from a couple who has eaten at almost every sushi place in Salt Lake. The service was great - prompt and friendly staff. The ambiance was good - nice but nothing too fancy. The menu is pretty extensive with lots of spicy options (our favorite). I love how they have it divided by the main fish in the roll. The sushi was awesome. We got the Saigon, the Hollywood (with added Siracha), the Cancun, and the Hamachi Chunk Roll. They were ALL fantastic. The Hollywood might have been my favorite; the salmon was so fresh. The Cancun had a REAL hot jalapeño in it so only go there if you really like some possible heat. I will definitely re-order any of them and I'm keen to try more! Their prices aren't bad at all - on par for the area, and on Tuesdays it's a GREAT deal. Can't beat it.

The sushi is decent, the dinners are great. I love the umagi don (eel and rice) bowl, and the bento boxes are delicious. Service is OK-not-great. I hate that parking lot, but it's hard to fault Akasaka specifically for that.

Always friendly and fast service! Their dinner specials are a pretty good value for a night dining out! ( 30$ for an appetizer, drinks, and 3 rolls)

Salmon bento is particularly good (sushi grade salmon). Sushi rolls are all good, & they offer 2 for 1 happy hours. The atmosphere is quaint & traditional, service is always friendly & attentive. Recommended.

I come here for lunch quite a bit because of their buy one get one special on rolls. The menu is extensive and I've had most of their rolls. I've never been disappointed. Definitely try the Akasaka Roll - very unique and packed with fish. Lindsey Roll is another favorite if you like deep fried. The only downside is parking. Gets pretty crowded with all the businesses around - make sure you check the spots in the back!

The sushi is just average here. There is nothing special about the food and the staff is nice but quiet. The energy here is dull like a library. Besides being relatively close to my office and offering buy one get one free sushi rolls there is not much attractive about Akasaka Sushi. I was especially disappointed that my udon tasted like noodles in hot water, there wasn't any flavor. I can't say I will eat here again.

Went to lunch here a couple days ago. Showed up at 2:20. There was a chef and a server there. The server was like "sorry, we close at 2:30." I was like, "but it's only 2:20." She was like "sorry, we close at 2:30." This used to be favorite restaurant. It always surprises me the things that some people who claim to be in business do to alienate their clientele. #fail

This is the best sushi I have found in salt lake. The price is right, and the service is good. Try the spica rolls.

It's a bit of a different looking place from the outside so we were very weary about eating there. The lady that sat us and waited on us was very sweet and kind. The food was excellent! We had the Shrimp Tempura roll, Vegas Roll and the Playboy roll. Plus soup and salad. It was very yummy!!'

came here twice (one for lunch and once for dinner). it's weird to eat sushi in a strip mall, but the service was good and our food came out fast. my bf really loved his udon noodles and couldn't get enough of the tofu. i ordered several rolls and even though they don't have a gluten free menu they were able to accommodate my needs (sauces/fish eggs on the side and no imitation crab). none of their rolls really stayed together well, but the sushi was decent. i wouldn't come back for dinner and pay full price when i can go to takashi or tsunami and pay a little bit more for better quality. however during the happy hour it's buy one get one free and that is definitely a good deal! i'll be back, but only during happy hour!

I think for Utah, this is a great sushi restaurant! The menu has a HUGE variety with lots of flavor combinations, unlike Takashi that is fancy over priced and all the rolls are super similar. We had GREAT service, for the FIRST TIME in all my sushi eating experiences, I was actually given LIGHT RICE on my rolls like I asked. This was VERY IMPRESSIVE. Everything was fresh and flavorful. Food came out quickly and it was beautiful. We bought a groupon and it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! They gained a good loyal customer from me!

Great place if you speak Japanese... Stopped in for lunch and placed my order. Everything was going fine until the cook came to our table and told use that she couldn't prepare some of our items the way we wanted. We then asked for her to make the rest of the order and we would add other rolls later. 45 minutes pass and two other tables that arrived 10 mins after us had been served and finished eating when I called the waitress over to our table. Her immediate statement was "Hai! Are you ready to order?" Seeing as I had already completed this step of the dining process, I decided to go else where with my business.

After at least five visits, it's time for a review. This is an affordable and reliably good sushi restaurant. I had a chiashi sushi bowl with 12 pieces of very fresh sashimi over rice, shredded daikon and beets with a bit of carrot and scallion. The sashimi was very good but the two cooked shrimp on the bowl were a bit tough. Also, the accompanying miso soup wasn't quite hot enough. But, overall it was a very tasty meal. Some visits to Akasaka have been better than others, but, lately the food has been of reliably good quality. Especially for the fair price.

Excellent! Service was so fast and the rolls were exceptionally fresh with beautiful presentation. Fast service could be due to fact there were only 3 tables at the time we went but i still think it would be an excellent choice at any time! The food really was so great and it was priced like ep very other sushi place

Ordered the Sushi Combo deluxe, and agedashi tofu ($30 groupon) The combo comes with one specialty roll of your choice (I chose the playboy roll - tempura shrimp and avocado inside, maguro and avocado on top with spicy mayo, kabayaki sauce, and tobiko), 6 piece nigirizushi (mine came with 2 maguro, 2 sake, 1 hamachi, and 1 izumidai), salad, and misoshiru (soup). The miso wasn't too salty and was nice and warm - perfect for a cold night. I really liked the salad, mostly because of the dressing, but everything was crisp and looked fresh. The agedashi tofu was just ok. The stock was a bit too salty (soy), and not enough fish flavor. The playboy roll was predictably delicious (how can you go wrong with sweet kabayaki sauce and spicy mayo?!), and the nigirizushi was kind of disappointment. I can't even describe the flavor of the maguro...metallic? It was way too 'fishy', and the hamachi and izumidai followed suit. The sake was pretty good. Overall, the highlights of the meal were the misoshiru, salad, and playboy roll. Recommendation: skip the nigirizushi/sashimi, and just stick with the rolls.

Awesome sushi! Lunch special of 2 rolls for the price of 1 is an incredible deal! I'll be a regular here.

I love Akasaka Sushi! its a great little place the owner and chefs are the best and will often do a roll special for me without avocado. They have good food at a great price. I take all my friends here for sushi and not one of them ever complains at the quality.

Excellent sushi! The rolls are detailed in their prep and presentation. Great grade of sushi. Buy 1 get 1 free happy hour 3-5pm!!

I've been watching my carb intake to help fight the puffy. I love pounding sushi rolls but all the rice made me plump. I found the sexy roll and it's pure protein and goodness. Tuna, salmon wrapped in cucumber! The best thing is its buy one get one free at lunch! I've lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks thanks to the sexy roll!

Love to enjoy a California roll with a hot cup of sencha. With some wasabi and some miso. Can't forget the tsukemono because it takes it to the next level. A nice seaweed salad with some tako sure helps to set the mood.

Wow. What an unexpected surprise. This place was incredible. The tempura veggies are awesome. Definitely not expected walking in that it would be this good. Everything we got was great! Try this place if you like sushi. I went because I snagged a groupon, and it was well worth it. Definitely one of my top sushi places now.

Excellent sushi with several unique rolls. Decent prices, pretty much par for what you would expect to pay for a good sushi place. We got 4-5 rolls, and each was excellent. It isn't the best sushi in Utah, but definitely worth it. The only problem I have is the location; if it were easier to get to, I would be much more willing to go back, but as it stands I would still go back if I were in the area again. I would highly recommend checking it out if you're nearby.

Let me be blunt. I just couldn't disagree more with most of these previous positive reviews. I never considered myself a sushi connoisseur, but seeing how much I disagree with the previous ratings and comments, I'm made to feel somewhat like an expert here so I'll put in my two cents in hopes of preventing the future disappointment of others. The sushi here was sub-par. Period. I just came home from Akasaka earlier this evening and felt an immediate need to write this review while still fresh in my head, which is more fresh the the grade of fish my wife and I just ate. Where should I begin: 1) Tempura udon: The broth base had a strong soy sauce flavoring to it, which is the correct broth base for other types of Japanese noodle dishes, but is not correct for tempura udon. It was salty. The only person who seemed to enjoy it was my sixteen month old daughter, and even then I rinsed the noodles in cold water for her enjoyment. The tempura that came with the udon were vegetable tempuras, I have never seen that before. It is always to be shrimp tempura. Always. 2) Every roll, regardless of which one I seemed to have ordered (I ordered three), tasted almost identical to one another. Same mayo sauce, same spice, same crunchy flakes. The combination of the flavors completely overpowered the fish to the point that the fish was no longer discernible. Don't read the description of the roll, as you might as well just order three of the exact same roll. 3) The sushi itself was, how do I put it, buffet quality. Bland, lacking texture or color. It was not fresh. The sushi rice had the quality of previously refrigerated rice, slightly hard, and not seasoned appropriately with vinegar. I gave up. 4) The only redeeming quality seemed to be the service. They were friendly. Orders were promptly served. Fellow yelpers who are not accustomed to quality sushi, be forewarned, this is not it. I feel this review in no way is overly critical or dramatic and accurately describes my experience. After all, yelp is only useful if we are all bluntly honest, even at the point of at times appearing mean.

Sauce, sauce, sauce. That's all I can say. I don't really know if there was any good sushi under all those sauces. I was highly disappointed and the next time I go in I will definitely ask for no sauce.

Went here for a group date, it was a Saturday night, the weekend of Sundance. Parking lot's a bit small but I think that normal nights wouldn't be quite as busy, so it's probably not a big deal. The people who work here are awesome, hooked my friends and I up with their rockin' karaoke machine, with top hits from Lady GaGa and the Biebs! Good times. The sushi rolls here were really good, I would HIGHLY recommend the Hollywood roll; I've been here multiple times since and I'm always on it like Blue Bonnet because that roll is so yummy. I love that they have chopsticks up front saved for their regular customers. I wish I ate sushi frequently enough to have my own pair, but sadly, I'm merely a poor, broke college student and sushi is a rare treat, for days when I actually have money in the bank, but also when I'm broke because I'm a grown woman and I play by my own rules. I digress, sushi is good, people are great. Go there.

Akaska is one of the best sushi places in the valley. It's a great little restaurant. Reasonably quiet and the service is good. My girlfriend and I eat here at least once a week. Highly recommend.

I'm not a sushi person so when I ate here with some friends last week I ordered the teriyaki chicken. The chicken was served with rice and was flavorful and moist. The teriyaki had a good flavor. I enjoyed my meal and my friends said their sushi was great. If your into sushi Akasaka Sushi seems like a good choice. The cost was a little expensive but probably no more expensive than most.

I think the food was good, I had sushi here and was fresh and authentic (made by Korean chef, by the way) The mama-san runs the place is nice, very attentative. Very casual place.

We had just flown to SLC and had to make a run to REI for camping supplies. Right around the corner, we found this little gem. The lunch special for $7/ea was perfect for our family of 4. With miso soup, rolls and rice bowls of chicken and pork teriyaki, our kids had plenty of flavors to choose from. Very affordable and great way to start our trip.

This place is a good Japanese restaurant but not the best I've been too either. The Tempura tasted good but the batter wasn't as lite and fluffy as other places I've been to. Sushi is good but standard, I'd definitely go here before a deli in a supermarket but it's not a fancy sushi restaurant like Takashi. Luckily prices are reasonable so that is a good thing. Simply put this is good Japanese for the price you pay. And considering it's next to Cafe Rio which is always bustling I'd consider the food just as good if not better (although completely different cuisine). If you're in the area and Japanese sounds good it's worth stopping by for a good meal.

Akasaka is a quaint little sushi place up on the edge of 33rd. The sushi selection is fairly diverse, and the food is well priced. I liked the small feel of the restaurant, and the waiting staff was very attentive to us even though it was a crowded Friday night. The sushi wasn't fantastic but I find it rare in Utah that a sushi place really "WOWS" me anymore. I like going here for a quick fix since it's close to my place!

This place has the best Spider crab appetizer in town, and their salmon baked rolls and Jalapeno rolls are to die for. Good miso, really friendly owners and never crowded for lunch.

Akasaka is a quaint little restaurant with very good sushi. I completely disagree with some of the other reviews that say it's worse than Mikado (I have been to Mikado Cottonwood, Sandy, and Bountiful) or Tsunami (have been to both Sugarhouse and Ft. Union numerous times) and none of them have the quality that compares to Akasaka. I haven't been to Takashi, and I hear it's wonderful, but I've also heard from those same people that Akasaka is second only to Takashi. They have two lunch specials that I know of: your choice of three rolls for like $20-ish (choose from a list of rolls), or buy-one-get-one-free which I think is a great deal since sushi can really get expensive. Support your local businesses and give this place a try!

    (4)
  • Angie M.

For salt lake this is our favorite non-trendy sushi place (Tsunami or Mikado). We've been going here for years. They are willing to modify rolls which was really important to me when I was pregnant. The restaurant is small, the staff is always attentive and the specials are always amazing. We've been pleasantly surprised by this relatively new Japanese restaurant. The ambience is simple and relatively austere but the food is terrific, particularly the sushi, which is fresh, innovative and affordable. When we're craving sushi and want to be eating a lot, fast, we go here and haven't been disappointed yet.
